Trump suspends reciprocal tariffs for 90 days, but raises tariffs on China to 125%

President Trump dramatically reversed his approach to imposing high tariffs globally on Wednesday, a move that had disrupted markets, angered members of his Republican Party, and sparked fears of an economic recession. Just hours after the steep tariffs on nearly 60 countries took effect, he announced a 90-day suspension of these measures.

However, the U.S. president made no concessions to China. Instead, he once again raised tariffs on all Chinese exports to the United States, pushing the import duties to a staggering 125%. This decision came after Beijing increased tariffs on American goods to 84%, as the tit-for-tat escalation between the world’s two largest economies showed no signs of cooling.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that he had authorized a “90-day pause,” during which countries would face “significantly reduced reciprocal tariffs” set at 10%. As a result, nearly all trading partners now face a uniform tariff rate of 10%, with China alone subject to a 125% tariff.
