Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP): Solve REACH Restriction for Fire Retardant Coating Formulation

As EU REACH regulation and global environmental standards tighten, fire retardant coating manufacturers face critical compliance challenges. Restrictions on halogens, heavy metals and PBDEs render traditional formulations unmarketable, while flame retardant demand in industrial and public scenarios remains strong. Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is a core solution to balance compliance and performance, due to its halogen-free, stable properties.
REACH restricts over 2000 harmful chemicals, including halogenated flame retardants in traditional coatings. PBBs and PBDEs are banned for their persistence and toxicity, with non-compliant manufacturers facing detention, fines or market exclusion.
Beyond compliance, halogenated flame retardants emit toxic gases when burned and poorly bond with epoxy/acrylic resins, causing delamination and reduced adhesion—driving demand for green alternatives.
As a halogen-free inorganic flame retardant, APP meets REACH requirements inherently. Its main component (NH4)n+2PnO3n+1 contains no restricted substances and is REACH-registered. With a white crystalline structure (melting point 240-280℃, decomposition temperature >300℃), it stays stable during coating curing.
APP achieves flame retardancy via intumescent carbon formation: high temperature triggers release of ammonia and polyphosphoric acid, promoting substrate carbonization to form an oxygen-insulating layer. Unlike halogenated options, it produces no toxic gases, aligning with green trends.
Formulation optimization unlocks APP’s full potential. For water-based coatings, industrial-grade APP (n≥1000 polymerization degree) ensures solubility and compatibility, preventing precipitation. For solvent-based coatings, silane coupling agent modification boosts dispersibility and adhesion.
APP pairs well with melamine and pentaerythritol for an intumescent system. Industrial tests confirm coatings with 25-30% APP (mass fraction) meet GB/T 8624-2012 B1 flame retardant level and grade 1 adhesion, satisfying most applications.
Amid environmental upgrades, APP drives the fire retardant coating industry’s transformation. Its halogen-free, compliant and stable traits solve REACH pain points and support fire safety—mastering APP application is key for manufacturers to compete.
